MSR residences are conveniently located to the second most important thing for students, food! (school is the first, right guys?). We wanted to create a post that will highlight the closest grocery stores and a little bit about each one so you can make an informed decision for where you want to shop!
1. Longos
This one-and done grocery store has everything you need. With a pharmacy, flower shop, bakery, hot table and Starbucks you can’t go wrong. So grab your Frappuccino and walk around this mega store with all the freshest fruits and vegetables! While this is not the cheapest of all the options here, it is definitely high quality products at a convenient location. You can get there in a 15 minute walk, or a 5 minute bus/car ride (Route 24, 36 or 49).

2. Starsky
This Polish-inspired grocery store also includes some little extras, like a cosmetics aisle and a café. They are known for their meats, and for good reason. If you’re a meat eater, we recommend you try some of their polish sausages- they can be easily incorporated into many meals and are just delicious! This establishment is a 5-minute bus/car ride from all MSR residences (route 36).

3. Costco
Who doesn’t want to live near a Costco? Costco is a warehouse that sells almost everything in bulk and at a cheaper rate! If the larger quantities scare you, try asking one of your new roommates if they would be interested in splitting groceries with you. Not only will this cut down on your monthly costs but it is an effective way to split the excess amounts. Reminder: you do need a special loyalty card to shop at this store. It can easily be acquired at their “membership” desk. There is a fee associated with this card so be sure to think about that when making your decision. This store is also a 5-minute car/bus ride from residence! Or a 15-20- minute walk.

4. No Frills
This store guarantees the lowest prices because of their emittance of extras that tend to hike up the average price of groceries, such as additional staff, plastic bags, and pretty but unnecessary décor. This is a good option for those on a budget and who don’t care about all the extras that have nothing to do with buying your food. Located at South Common Mall, this store is a mere 5-10-minute- bus/car ride from residence. While you could potentially walk here, we don’t recommend that with your hands full of bags!

5. Wal-Mart
Like No Frills, this superstore is also located at South Common Mall. It is the perfect go-to store for all of your needs. Groceries, clothes, entertainment, décor, cards, cosmetics, medical and so much more! It is so convenient living in close proximity to a Wal-Mart as a student and we definitely do not take it for granted! This trumps all the other options we have available in terms of extras, cost and convenience. You will need to either bus or drive to this store, but it is on the way from UTM to MSR Residences, making it perfect to stop off for some quick supplies on your way home.
